Our fall book fair at Southwest has just wrapped up. It was another successful book fair with lots of students taking home brand new books. I tend to have a love/hate relationship with book fair. I love the thought of students getting to purchase new books to read and then keep. However, I see many of our students, who can't afford books from the fair, look longingly at the selection when they come with their class to preview. I wish I could buy enough books for all of them to have one of their very own. That, unfortunately, just isn't possible. I do try and take a lot of the more popular books out of the fair and pay for them with Scholastic Dollars. These will eventually make their way into our library collection so that all students, whether they could afford them or not, will have the opportunity to read them. The book fair also provides much needed funds for our media center. It is important to keep our collection up-to-date, providing students a variety of reading choices and providing teachers a variety of titles that will support their instruction in the classroom. So, now that the fair is finished, and my wonderful husband has helped me take all of it down and pack it away, my favorite part of book fair has arrived . . . getting back to teaching my classes and spending our book fair proceeds! Until the next fair rolls around that is . . . how long until February???

About me . . .Formerly a classroom teacher. Currently a School Library Media Coordinator. I loved being in the classroom, but now that I am in the library I can't imagine doing anything else! The library is my favorite place to be. From my rocking chair to my ABC rug to the smiling student faces checking out books, the library just can't be beat! Archives
