In third grade each year students learn more about how to effectively use the library. They learn how to use the circulation system to search for specific books and then they learn how to find those books on the shelves. They learn how the books are arranged on the shelves in each section: easy, fiction, and nonfiction. To help teach this to my students, I show them a Curious George episode called "Book Monkey." In this episode, George goes to the library with the man in the yellow hat. While there, he volunteers to help out the overworked librarian. One of the things he decides to do is rearrange all the books on the shelves - first by color, then by size, and finally by subject. The librarian comes back in at the end and teaches George that books are arranged by subject first, then by the author's last name. Watching this episode is a great introduction for my students as they begin learning about the organization of the library. As we continue through our unit, we build on the basic themes from this Curious George show. Finally, to show what they have learned, students team up with a partner and take part in a scavenger hunt. This scavenger hunt is the culmination of our Learning to Use the Library unit. Students get really excited about the scavenger hunt but they also get excited by knowing that they will be better able to use the library to find books they are looking for. As soon as they learn how to search the catalog, they all want to use the catalog computers before checkout time that day. As the librarian, it is great to see the students' enthusiasm as they take charge at checkout time and actively search for books they are interested in reading.
