Corduroy
Hey there Lion Cubs! Happy Wednesday! Welcome back for another edition of Long Distance Library. Our theme today is all about bears and we are going to start with one of my favorites. When I was a little girl my mom signed me up for a Scholastic book club. Each month a brand new book arrived for us to read together. I still have a few of those books from way back then and Corduroy is one of them. I think one of the reasons I loved this book so much was that the little girl in the story is named Lisa - which is my name. I think I connected with this book because the little girl and I shared the same name. So, click here for my daily video and then we will get started with a read aloud of one of my favorites, Corduroy.
Our bear theme starts off today with the book Corduroy, written by Don Freeman. Corduroy spends his days displayed on a toy shelf in a department store. One day, a young girl named Lisa arrives at the store with her mother and spots Corduroy. She is eager to buy him, but her mother refuses to spend money on a bear with a button missing from his overalls. That night, Corduroy goes on a search through the department store for his missing button. He discovers many different things that he has never seen before, but doesn't end up with his missing button. Will he ever find a home with a loving friend? Or will he be stuck on that toy shelf forever? You'll have to read the story to find out. Click here to hear the author's son, Roy, read his father's book aloud. I know you will enjoy Corduroy as much as I do.
We will continue our bear theme with a book titled Mother Bruce. This book, written by Ryan T. Higgins, is about a bear named Bruce. Bruce likes to keep to himself. He also likes to eat eggs. But, when his hard-boiled goose eggs turn out to be real, live goslings, he starts to lose his appetite. And even worse, the goslings are convinced he's their mother. Bruce tries everything he can think of to get the geese to go south, but he just can't seem to get rid of his new family. What in the world will he do? This is a super fun book with adorable illustrations of Bruce's goslings. If you'd like to find out what Bruce comes up with, click here to go to Storytime with Ryan and Craig where you can hear them read aloud Mother Bruce.
Ok, so this one is not about bears. But it is another fun read. This book, titled Be Quiet!, is also written by Ryan T. Higgins. The characters in this book show up in some of the other Mother Bruce books. So, just to have another fun and silly story, you can click here to go back to Storytime with Ryan and Craig where I know you will enjoy Be Quiet!
Does anyone really know the bears next door? In the book The Bears We Know, written by Brenda Silsbe, nobody has actually seen the inhabitants of the house at the end of the road, but that doesn't stop the gossip. They sleep late every day, and their house is a mess. They eat bagfuls of chips, and they jump on the furniture. They sing songs that make them cry, and they stay up way too late. Also, they growl if anyone gets too close, so nobody visits. But you don't need to visit to know all about these bears, right? Click here to take a trip on over to TumbleBooks to hear all about The Bears We Know.
We are going to wrap up today's Long Distance Library with one more bear book. This book, titled Tops & Bottoms, written by Janet Stevens, is about a lazy bear with lots of money and lots of land. Hare, on the other hand, has nothing but a hungry family, but he's very smart. Hare is sure there's a way to share Bear's wealth, so he and Mrs. Hare cook up a plan. Hare hops down the road to Bear's place and proposes that Bear donate land. Hare does all the work but agrees to share the crop with Bear. All Bear has to do is choose the half he wants - tops or bottoms. Sleepy Bear takes tops but finds out, once the harvest is in, that he's been tricked by clever Hare! This is a fun trickster tale that I think you will enjoy. I wonder if Bear will ever learn his lesson? Click here to go back to TumbleBooks to find out what happens in the book Tops & Bottoms.
