The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Hey there Lion Cubs! Happy Wednesday! Welcome back for another edition of Long Distance Library. Today we have a creepy-crawly theme. We are going to start off with another one of those books that I have had since I was a little girl. In previous Long Distance Library lessons I showed you my Where the Wild Things Are book and my Corduroy book that I have had since I was little. I still have my Very Hungry Caterpillar book, too. So, I thought that would be a great theme for today's Long Distance Library. Click here for my daily video and then let's get started.
We are starting out our creepy-crawly theme with a book by Eric Carle titled The Very Hungry Caterpillar. One sunny Sunday, a caterpillar was hatched out of a tiny egg. He was very hungry. On Monday, he ate through one apple. On Tuesday, he ate through three plums and he was still hungry. When full at last, he made a cocoon around himself and went to sleep, to wake up a few weeks later wonderfully transformed into a butterfly! If you would like to hear about all the other things the caterpillar ate during his first week, you can click here to see Eric Carle read aloud his book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Then, you have to go have a snack, too!
How about another caterpillar book? This one comes from author Ross Burach and is called The Very Impatient Caterpillar. This book is one of our North Carolina Children's Book Award nominees this year. It is a super silly and super fun book about an impatient caterpillar. When a group of caterpillars scamper up a tree to metamorphosize, one of them is still learning about this whole transformation thing. Who knew that with a little time, and patience, he could become a beautiful butterfly? But the two-week wait inside his chrysalis feels like it is taking forever. His fellow caterpillars all tell him to be patient and let nature take its course, but the waiting is just so hard. Can he do it? If you'd like to find out, click here to head over to Storytime with Ryan and Craig to hear all about The Very Impatient Caterpillar, written by Ross Burach.
Pedro is a very popular character in our beginning reader books at school. This series, written by Fran Manushkin, is about a little boy named Pedro, who is actually a classmate and friend of Katie Woo, another of our favorite characters. In this book, a school assignment has Pedro collecting bugs, bugs, and more bugs. But what will happen when his brother Paco lets them all out? If you would like to find out, then you can click here to go to KidLit Tv to hear author Fran Manushkin read aloud her book Pedro Goes Buggy.
Click on the play symbol above to see Carmen Agra Deedy read aloud her book Martina the Beautiful Cockroach. She does an amazing job! I loved watching her read her book.

If I said, "Let's read a story about a cockroach," you would probably turn your nose up at that wouldn't you? Normally I would too, but this one is a little different. Written by Carmen Agra Deedy, this is a Cuban Folktale called Martina the Beautiful Cockroach. Martina is a beautiful cockroach who doesn't know anything about love and marriage until she gets some great advice from her grandmother. According to her Abuela, she needs to present each of her suitors with the Coffee Test. Will the test work? Will she ever find her true love?

How about we find some nonfiction information about creepy crawlies to wrap up our Long Distance Library time today? I am going to recommend a couple of fun websites where we can find out anything and everything we ever wanted to know about insects. Our two choices today are National Geographic Kids and Wonderopolis. Both sites are full of colorful pictures and plenty of nonfiction facts about caterpillars, butterflies, cockroaches, and insects in general. Try the links below and see what you can learn about the creepy crawlies in the world around us.
