Once Upon a Time . . .
Hi there Lion Cubs! Happy Thursday! Welcome to another edition of Long Distance Library. Today we have a fairy tale theme for our reading choices. We are going to start our fairy tale theme with a story about a prince and a kiss that missed! Put on your suit of armor, get on your horse, and let's get started!
How about a fairy tale with a prince this time? That's just what we get with the book The Kiss That Missed, written by David Melling. One evening, when the King is in a hurry, his goodnight kiss to the Little Prince goes astray. After rattling around the Prince's bedroom, it flies out the window and floats into the dark forest. The King decides to do something about it. He orders the Knight to climb on his horse, ride into the forest, and bring back the kiss. But the forest is filled with spooky things that frighten both the Knight and his horse. How will they ever succeed in bringing the kiss back to the castle? If you would like to find out what happens to the Knight and the goodnight kiss, you can click here to go to Storyline Online where you can hear a read aloud of David Melling's book The Kiss That Missed.
We all know the story of the Gingerbread Man right? How he teased everyone by saying, "Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread Man?" Well, this is Lisa Campbell Ernst's story of The Gingerbread Girl. In this book, the lonely old woman and the lonely old man decide to bake a girl this time, but when they open the oven, she runs off just like her brother did. Never fear, this smart cookie has a plan to outfox the fox who outsmarted her brother! Will it work? Let's just say that the ending is sweet for everyone. We had a story with a prince, so now let's have one with a princess. This book is called Princess Justina Albertina and is written by Ellen Dee Davidson. Princess Justina Albertina likes getting her own way. Her nanny, when faced with a choice between a royal tantrum or giving in to the princess' demands, always caves. So when the princess insists on getting the perfect pet, her nanny does her best to oblige, scouring the Earth for unusual animals. None of them is quite right, though: the puffer fish ignores the princess, she cannot ride the two-headed dog, and the monkey scares too easily. Finally the nanny returns with a fierce gryphon, which the princess declares is perfect. This time, however, Princess Justina Albertina has bitten off more than she can chew, with tragic results. We are going to wrap up our fairy tale theme today with a trip over to to Sesame Street to visit with our friend Kermit the Frog. Kermit is reporting on some fairy tale characters for Sesame Street News. First he visits with Rapunzel in her tower. Then, he stops by Granny's house where he runs into Little Red Riding Hood. And finally, he tries to help the miller's daughter figure out Rumpelstiltskin's name in time to save her child. It's all in a day's work for Kermit and Sesame Street News.
