Rainbow Fish
Happy Monday, Lion Cubs! Welcome to another edition of Long Distance Library. In these times of staying at home and social distancing, I have been thinking of places I'd like to be instead. A trip to the beach has always been one of my favorites. So, in honor of a trip to the beach that I can't take, we're going to have some fishy themed stories today. Click here for my daily video and then let's get started! |
We're going to start with a fishy favorite titled The Rainbow Fish, written and illustrated by Marcus Pfister. This is a great story about making friends. In the beginning, Rainbow Fish had difficulty sharing with the other fish in the sea. Because of this, he has trouble making friends. Only when Rainbow Fish learns to share does he discover how important friends can be. Click here to go to Storyline Online and hear the story of The Rainbow Fish. |
How about one more Rainbow Fish story? In this story, Rainbow Fish and his friends meet a big, blue whale. At first they are afraid of the whale because he is different. The big, blue whale overhears the fish talking about him and his feelings are hurt. Only Rainbow Fish is brave enough to approach the whale to work things out. This is a great story about accepting others no matter their differences and proves that we can all be friends no matter what. Click here to go to Storytime with Ryan and Craig to hear the story of Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale. |
How about another fishy story? This one is all about piranhas. Piranhas are fish that have lots of very sharp teeth. They are found in South American rivers, lakes, and streams. They usually eat crabs, small fish, lizards, mammals, and insects. However, in this story, one little piranha likes to eat bananas! What will his friends think? Click here to visit Storytime with Ryan and Craig to find out. |
With our fishy theme today, there would be no better place to visit than an aquarium. Again, since we can't do that right now, how about we visit one online? Click here to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This link takes you to a collection of webcams on their website. They have several to choose from. But, since we are all about fish today, let's visit the coral reef cam by clicking here. I wonder what kinds of fish we will see swim by? Maybe we'll catch sight of the Rainbow Fish! |
For more information on the ocean and all the animals living there, we can take a visit to PebbleGo. In the animal database, you can search for different animals that live in the ocean, or you can learn more about the ocean as a habitat. Did you know that dolphins can leap about 16 feet high above the ocean? Click here to go to PebbleGo and find out more fun facts about ocean animals. Let's wrap up our fishy Long Distance Library, by making some flying fish. Click here for a 10 minute engineering activity on flying fish. You'll need a marker, cardboard, scissors, paper clips, string, chairs, and tape. Follow the directions found at the link above to create your own flying fish. Have your family make fish with you and get together for a flying fish race. Ready, set, GO! |
