Children's Book Week
Hey Lion Cubs! Happy Thursday! Welcome to another edition of Long Distance Library. This year Children's Book Week will be celebrated twice. One of those weeks will be in November and the other is this week. So in honor of Children's Book Week our theme today is all about books and the places you go to find them. We have books about books and books about libraries and librarians. Click here for my daily video and then let's get reading!
We are going to start off today with my favorite book about a library. Written by Michelle Knudsen, the book is titled Library Lion. In this book, Miss Merriweather, the head librarian, is very picky about rules in the library like no running and you must be quiet. But when a lion comes to the library one day, no one knows what to do. There aren't any rules about lions in the library. The lion seems to fit right in in the library. His feet are quiet on the library floor and he makes a great backrest for the children at story hour. But then something unexpected happens and the lion feels like he has to break the rules. But what will happen once he does? Click here to go to Storyline Online to hear the book Library Lion read aloud. And remember, like Miss Merriweather says, "No running!"
I love books. That's no surprise, right? Well, in this book by Oliver Jeffers, The Incredible Book Eating Boy, Henry loves books, too. However, Henry doesn't like to read books, he likes to eat them! Big books or picture books, it just doesn't matter. The more he eats, the smarter he gets until he is on his way to being the smartest boy in the world. How long can Henry keep this up? Unfortunately, not much longer. Can Henry find a way to enjoy books without using his teeth? To find out, click here to see author and illustrator, Oliver Jeffers read aloud his book The Incredible Book Eating Boy.
Here's another story about a little boy who loves books. Written and illustrated by Debbie Ridpath Ohi, Where Are My Books?, is about a little boy named Spencer who loves to read. He reads a book every night. But one morning his favorite books goes missing and in its place is a flower. Spencer looks everywhere but he just can't find his book. The next morning another book is missing and the day after that yet another book goes missing. Just what is happening to Spencer's books? You'll have to listen to the story to find out. Click here to hear author and illustrator Debbie Ridpath Ohi read you her book Where Are My Books? Stay tuned after the story and she's got a drawing lesson for you too!
So tell me. Have you read anything good lately? That is the question that starts off the book Read Anything Good Lately? written by Susan Allen and Jane Lindaman. This alphabet book lists many different kinds of things that can be read and all the different places to read them. What about an atlas at an airport? Or a biography in bed? Follow the little girl in the story as she reads from place to place, with friends or alone, indoors and out. What are your favorite things to read? And what are your favorite places to read them? Click here to go to TumbleBooks and maybe you can ask, "Read Anything Good Lately?"
We're going to wrap up our day with a super cute story about a little girl named Lola and her trips to the library. Written by Anna McQuinn, the book is titled Lola at the Library. Lola loves Tuesdays because that is the day she and her mother go to the library. Everything about the trip is an exciting adventure from packing her backpack with books and her library card, to storytimes and singing, to choosing new books. Lola even looks forward to the walk home when her and her mother always stop for a special treat. But the best time of all is when her mother reads her a story at bedtime. Click here to go to TumbleBooks where you can enjoy the story of Lola at the Library.
